Description: Messor aciculatus is known as the Harvester Ant due to the way they collect seeds and store them in the nest. They do this to chew up the seeds and make 'ant bread' which is 70% of their diet. They are really sensitive to light and vibrations but once the colony gets going, they can reach impressive numbers. A heat and moisture gradient is important for Messor species as they store their seeds in the drier parts. One of the only Messor species who can have multiple queen colonies!
